Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in Down's Syndrome Is Highly Responsive to Chemotherapy: Experience on Pediatric Oncology Group AML Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
The treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in children with Down's syndrome (DS) has engendered considerable controversy. Because of the concerns for toxicity and increased rate of infections, treatment approaches varied considerably in the past with mixed results. However, experience on the recently completed Pediatric Oncology Group (POG) 8498 AMI. study suggests that DS children with AML constitute a distinct subgroup that responds well to therapy. Twelve of 285 children on POG 8498 (protocol for newly diagnosed AML) had DS. Children with DS and AML were predominantly male (9 of 12) and were quite younger at diagnosis (<24 months in 10). The white blood cell count was less than 50 x 103/pL in all 12 and French-American-British types M6 and M7 were frequent (5 of 12). An abnormal cytogenetic marker, in addition to constitutional trisomy 21,

متن کاملPrognostic Value of BAALC Expression in Pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Systematic Review
Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a malignant disorder involving blood cells, characterized by obstructed or distorted differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells. In cytogenetically normal AML (CN AML), molecular abnormalities in NPM, FLT3, CEBPA, and BAALC genes are observed. Initially, high BAALC (Brain and Acute Leukemia Cytoplasmic gene) expression was introduced in a study on AM...
متن کاملClinical and Laboratory Findings of Cup-Like Nuclei in Blasts with FLT3 Mutation in Pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Case Report
Biologically, Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is highly heterogenous. AML with cup-like blast morphology variant has been reported to have important role in risk group stratification and treatment implications. In pediatric age group, this morphology and its clinical implication is rarely discussed. Although this morphology variant is not stated in World Health Organization (WHO) classification of...
متن کاملAnalysis of BAALC gene Expression as prognosis factor in Pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia in Iran
Background:Brain and Acute Leukemia Cytoplasmic (BAALC) is a gene which its expression is confined to progenitor cells; therefore, no expression has been illustrated in mature cells of bone marrow or white blood cells (WBC). In addition, high BAALC expression is associated with poor prognosis in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) individuals and is considered as an important risk factor in Cyto...
متن کاملGene Identification from Microarray Data for Diagnosis of Acute Myeloid and Lymphoblastic Leukemia Using a Sparse Gene Selection Method
Background: Microarray experiments can simultaneously determine the expression of thousands of genes. Identification of potential genes from microarray data for diagnosis of cancer is important. This study aimed to identify genes for the diagnosis of acute myeloid and lymphoblastic leukemia using a sparse feature selection method. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, the expressio...
